(Inula helenium) Perennial herb in the Aster Family. Blooms second year, with golden-yellow blossoms like sunflowers with bed-head. To 5 ft. tall. Premier herb for lung health, in use by humans for over 2000 years. (It’s named after Helen of Troy!) Effective expectorant that imparts anesthetic effect on the throat, relieving pain from coughing. Has been used to treat tuberculosis.
Planting suggestions: Direct-seed in early Spring. Light-dependent germinator. Press seeds firmly into soil, but don’t bury. Should appear in about two weeks. In second year needs 24″ spacing. Not particular about soil type, but will do better with compost. Full-sun to part-shade with regular watering. Harvest roots in Fall of second or third year.
