(Oenothera biennis) Biennial in the Onagraceae Family. Yellow blossoms make a lovely addition to any flower garden. Grows 1-5 ft. tall when blooming. The nutty-flavored first-year roots are edible. The mature seeds contain gamma-linolenic acid, and the seed oil has been used to treat premenstrual pain.
Cultivation & harvesting suggestions:
Sow in Spring, in flats or directly in the garden. Give spacing of 12-24”. First-year plants produce only a rosette of foliage, with flowering in the second year. Grows naturally in disturbed areas, so is not picky about soil type and is drought-tolerant once established. Self-sows readily.
