We discovered this amazing plant a few years ago in the Horizon Herbs seed catalog. Also known as “Cordao” and “Shandilay”, this member of the Mint Family is native to India and tropical Africa. We grew a 100+ specimen crop. The fantastic inflorescences attracted bees and other pollinators. In a highly entertaining show, hummingbirds fought each other for hover-space next to the blossoms.
We hand-picked the flowers only, every few days over the season. They fell at the rate of at least one-per-minute all day long. At peak, it was difficult to keep up; a single harvest around the spiral with two people could take three hours or more. The foliage is said to be the strongest part of the plant, in terms of active constituents.
Leonotis species have been used for respiratory tract health, including treating strep throat. Topically, they have been applied to excema and insect bites. Erowid describes them as “sedative” and “intoxicant”.
Some of our experiences with Klip Dagga: In a salve, it caused some numbness to the area where it was applied. As a tincture, it was an effective pain-killer for chronic conditions, and acute situations. Also, as a way of smoking less tobacco, since it interacts with some of the same receptors that nicotine does. Eating it or smoking it can lead to stumbling and temporary short-term memory loss. A fun plant!
