(Mentha pulegium) Perennial in the Mint Family, native to Europe. Ground-cover habit with spikes of purple flowers. Very strong spearmint scent. Consumed by humans since at least the time of the ancient Greeks & Romans, who used it as a cooking herb. Medicinally, has been a treatment for coughs & colds and for breaking fevers. For centuries, women have found the leaves & flowers useful for safely alleviating menstrual pain & cramping. Also known as an effective insect repellent. Hard to find.
Cultivation & harvesting suggestions:
Sow in Spring. Thin to 8” apart. Drought-tolerant once established. Spreads by rhizomes, so can be propagated by root division. Harvest flowering tops when blooming begins.
