Pennyroyal has been consumed by humans since at least the time of the ancient Greeks & Romans, who used it as a cooking herb. Medicinally, it has been used to treat coughs & colds and for breaking fevers. For centuries, women have found the leaves & flowers useful for safely alleviating menstrual pain & cramping, and for its emmenagogic properties; that is, Pennyroyal can stimulates menstrual flow, and women have used it to help start a “stuck” period. In larger amounts, and often in combination with other herbs, it has been used as an abortifacient. Also known as an effective insect repellent.
The dangers of the Pennyroyal herb have been greatly overstated, due mostly to the ignorant ingestion by a Colorado woman of an entire ounce of Pennyroyal essential oil, which caused her death (reference). Many (if not most) essential oils would kill you if you consumed that much of them. This product is not the essential oil of Pennyroyal; it is an alcohol and water tincture of the flowering tops of the plant, which is far more dilute.
Over-use of Pennyroyal can adversely affect the kidneys, which is true of other herbs. We urge you to research this herb yourself, or consult with someone who is knowledgeable about herbs. Many women have found that judicious use of Pennyroyal is beneficial for their cycle and health.
