(Scutellaria baicalensisPerennial in the Mint Family native to Siberia, Mongolia & N. China. Low-growing, to 12” high, with blue flowers that Richo Cech of Horizon Herbs describes as evoking “schools of dolphins”. One of the “50 Fundamental Herbs” of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which names it “Huang Qin”. Roots are the harvested part. Considered antiviral and anti-bacterial, used to lower fevers and blood pressure, plus many other uses. Studies are suggesting anti-cancer benefits.

Planting suggestions: Direct seed around the time of the last frost, or start indoors earlier than that and transplant out. Thin to 12-18” apart. Well-drained soil (even rocky) and scant water. Full sun. Totally frost-hardy. Roots are harvested in second year or thereafter.
