Skullcap, Official – seed packet

Notes/Special Instructions (if any):

(Scutellaria lateriflora) Perennial in the Mint Family. To 18” high, with blue flowers hanging off one side of the stem. Spreads by shallow, lateral roots. Very cold hardy (reputedly down to -20F). Flavor is somewhat bitter. An excellent herb for acute or chronic nervous tension – as tincture, tea, or smoked. Smoked, the flavor evokes the taste of an exotic cookie. The flowering tops are the medicine, so the harvest can be increased by pinching the tips to make them double a few times before budding.

Planting suggestions: Direct seed around the time of the last frost, or start indoors earlier than that and transplant out. Thin to 12 inches apart. Can take full sun but prefers partial shade. Water regularly, such as by including it on a soaker hose set-up. New patches can be made by digging up sections of root (as short as 3” in length) and burying them shallowly.

Contains at least 100 seeds. Packed for 2016.
